British independent cinema at its best

Psychological thriller set on the English Channel island of Jersey. It has an element of one of those 1970s low budget Tales Of The Unexpected/Bergerac directed by Pete Walker about it!

The film is centred around a young female character Moll (played by the excellent Jessie Buckley). Moll is a bit of an enigma. Unfairly upstaged by her relatives we see one such example at a supposed birthday party/BBQ being staged for her where she is gazumped by her sister in law announcing to everyone she is pregnant with twins.

Moll's history is revealed revealing a shocking childhood event. Her mother is domineering and controlling (Geraldine James) inadvertently treating Moll less favourably than her brother? Moll is left to babysit not only her nephew/niece but look after her I'll father who has some form of dementia. Anyway she cracks under the pressure leaving the party and getting drunk at a club. She forms an erotic friendship with a rather unfamiliar character Pascal (Johnny Flynn).

The friendship is met with dismay by her mother and upper class fraternity. All these events are taking place whilst Jersey is being terrorised by a serial killer. It transpires the 'rough' Pascal is one of the suspects at first unknown to Moll who is enjoying her sexual freedom. As the film progresses Moll learns of the police suspicions and herself has doubts as to Pascals involvement in the killings. That forms the backbone of the film. The viewer makes their own mind up.

British independent film just gets better and better in 2018. The low budget is counter balanced by the performances of the cast and haunting location photography of Jersey. (I never watched Bergerac!) The end of the film is even more shocking than the events that have taken place beforehand. Let's just say Moll isn't the sweet and innocent choir singer and coach tour guide seen at the start of the film.

intriguing darkness

Moll is a young woman living at home in a small community. She feels stifled by her family after a tragic incident when she was thirteen. She falls for a passing stranger named Pascal Renouf with a dark side. Young girls are going missing and a serial killer is suspected on the loose.

Jessie Buckley is intriguing. Johnny Flynn is a classic bad boy. All he's missing is a motorcycle. The movie starts with Moll's birthday party. It would be informative to declare loudly Moll's age to fix the power dynamics of her character with her family. I assumed her to be younger at the beginning which makes a big difference. There is a great brooding dark atmosphere. A few of the scenes travel in the style of horrors. I assumed a shocking twist which would have Moll as the killer. That could have been a fun reveal. The ending is fine. It's darkly haunting if a little safe. Overall, this has a great tone and solid performances.

Soft and fluffy

No that is not what you get - the question about the title is still not easy to answer. While you think it is one thing (or describes one person), it may be actually someone or something else. The conclusion and what you feel is the truth, is left up to you. Yes there will be answers to the most important question(s), but that doesn't mean that is all the movie is giving you.

This is a fight, a struggle - a woman that is being repressed and is hiding her emotions. Until she meets this new guy ... who't completely free, does what he likes, no matter what others think of him. But does that also mean he could potentially be dangerous? Are we as humans all beasts? In a different sense some maybe, but out to get others some way or another.

Socially and otherwise this has a lot to tell, though it does focus on the female character/protagonist. Something we don't get to see often, at least not in Blockbuster movies. So it is always refreshing to get a low budget take/thriller on certain subjects. This is really well made and superbly acted.
